Perhaps the Lady Gowrie proposal has uncovered a gap in the community's (and Council's) understanding and appreciation of the Oval as almost the only remaining area that could reasonably be claimed as a West Hobart "commons". I rode through there the other day at about 5pm and it was alive with kids playing on the oval, people walking their dogs and others generally enjoying the open space and greenery. I know we have Knocklofty close to hand, but the oval is currently so accessible and I for one have taken it for granted until now.

Apart from apparently having a few typos, this motion doesn't really say anything, and certain doesn't give any background to its reason for being. It hides what is presumably its main driver (the proposed Lady Gowrie child-care facility on the site) in the strange statement "the impact of any the new development to the area".

I think, if it is going to have any effect, the motion needs to be rethought and rewritten with a bit more openess and clarity - at the moment (reading between the lines) it looks like standard NIMBY material.

On the other hand, I received a pretty clear, open and reasonable handout in the mail today from Andrew Wilkie about the Lady Gowrie proposal - this is the kind of basic information that could provide background for the motion.

I checked the link, and there were a lot of helpful and interesting facts presented about ways to save energy. I just hope more people realize the importance of cutting down their energy usage and, more importantly, the monetary benefits they will get. Let's accept it. Not everyone is a fan of Captain Planet, so let's encourage them to conserve energy in a way they'd better appreciate.

Thank you all so much for this wonderful document. Fun to work out where to walk next, and find different routes.
I think the Hillstreet Butcher (corner Hillstreet/Hamilton street) deserves to be included, considering other (current and future!) food outlets that are included.
Also, there are poobags available at the entry to Hamilton Oval from Lansdowne Crescent and from
Hamilton Street.

Thanks for printing and distributing your map, it's great to know the history of our neighbourhood.

I'm pretty sure West Hobart was originally called Stanwell Park. It was first settled as a farming ditrict and had orchards, dairy, hops and Chinese market gardens (see West Hobart in Wikipedia). The original farm house is at 81 Lansdowne Crescent and is probably the oldest building in the area. It would be good to include the old tram route and boys home in Lansdowne Crescent in your next edition.

OK here are another couple.Narrow walkway from Whelan Crescent down to Corby Ave. From there you can take either Barton Street or the stairs that go down to Salvator Road.
There is a also a curious walkway that leads down to the Rivulet Track via Roberts Street - a narrow No Through Road which turns left off Forest Road and goes down the northern edge of the Peace Park. From there cross Liverpool Street and go along the mesh fence towards the city until there's an opening. Once you reach it there are short stairs. Turn right here and follow the footpath. It makes a sharp left turn and leads down to the ribbon path along the Rivulet.

Electric bikes can definitely help in contributing to a more sustainable transport solution. I think also, that they are perfect for getting the baby boomer population into bike riding.

As these baby boomers age, they would not normally want to continue riding a bike for physical reasons. With the extra help of the electric motor, they could continue riding as they age. And continue to receive the benefits of exercise from cycling.
